We sat down with Rodrigo Alfaro, Patten U. Student Body President, and he shared some thoughts about his goals and vision for this school year along with some upcoming events for the next few weeks. Take a look.

Welcome to the Jungle. . .with Lions

Welcome one and all to the new school year. I am positively ecstatic for all the expansion we are doing with your Patten University Literary Publication: The Wire. This year we are going to have Podcasts, a YouTube Channel, this blog and of course, your beloved magazine coming to a desk near you at least every two weeks, maybe one week, but I can’t make any promises. Besides, you people have homework to do, you can’t afford to be distracted once a week by something as amazing as this is going to be. And if we do end up doing it once a week, you can always catch up in Summer.

Ah Summer! The time for reading lists, minimum wage jobs and action movies with a severe lack of character. I didn’t get halfway through my reading list. I got sun burnt worse than the Sahara on my summer job and I felt like I lost 50 IQ points just for buying the ticket to Transformers 2. But the good news is that Perez Hilton got punched in the face, It’s about time! Too bad it was at the after party to the awards ceremony. Otherwise whoever clocked him would have gotten an award too. I am sure that whoever did it got a warm welcome. And speaking of warm welcomes, wasn’t it nice to be welcomed by the gift of someone’s personal photo album? Too bad there was a mix-up and it somehow got a hardcover with “2009 Yearbook” etched on the front.

Now that summer is over (school starting again officially overrides any authority some calendar might have), the time has come to start ordering books which is a task that is so much easier now that we have a campus bookstore that is not also a café, even though you still have to pay for them in the café but hey! Who’s complaining?. . .we have a bookstore. Now we can actually buy them from the students via the bookstore (BTW if you have books you need to sell you can sell them back to the bookstore). I’m pretty sure no one uses the same books we do (because we are smart like that) so if you see a book that is used at Amazon it is most likely the kid that sits across from you in the library. It might even be someone from the same dorm or house sending it to the post office so that it can be sent back to the same dorm it came from to be used in a different room.

What with all the expansion we are making and the promise of so much for the year it goes without saying that I am just a little excited about the way that the newspaper is going to turn out. I hope you all enjoy it and are here to support all of our brand new staff writers as well as both of our returning ones.
